

Co-working space used by students preparing for study abroad or getting employed in Japan. In the space between small raised floors, we planned to allow people to gather and "WA” (circle) by eliminating partitions, making various events possible. The cafe area incorporates elements of Japanese architecture such as combing finish, and you can feel "WA” (harmony) around. Young people interested in Japan and Japanese companies are casually gathered, making it a place where Japan can be felt as "second house" anytime. Natural leaves and branched are arranged in the ikebana style on lighting fixtures and furniture, so that spaces become surrounded by warmth of the nature. Reclaimed materials, which have been exposed to the nature and well weathered, are applied to the walls in order to harmonise with withering of the trees beyond the windows. The large living and dining area are embraced with dynamic wooden frames made of pine. Embedding of spaces with different characters in the forest, and having them blended into the existing scenery, the depth of forest can be experienced in anywhere one may stand. Room surround and shape multiple gardens which are accented by existing trees and retaining walls of Asama stones. Rooms are placed per difference of elevation on a sloped landscape. Mentors are invited to an annual dinner and discussion to not only thank them for their service but also to provide an opportunity to share best practices among each other. Future Link hosts an annual picnic and frequent Happy Hours in order to bring mentors and mentees together as the synergy always generates additional opportunities for our students. Mentors help mentees stay focused on their pathway with respect to post-secondary education and career. Mentors work closely with their mentee to reinforce the key principles of our Self-Advocacy Skills and Career Development Seminar, including the importance of soft skills and the value of networking. Our mentors are caring professionals who serve as positive role models and help guide our young adults (ages 18-25) toward good educational and career decisions. In addition to the valuable mentoring, Future Link also provides scholarships, internships, and academic tutoring to our students.įuture Link carefully screens and supports adult volunteers who work with Future Link students for a one year minimum, although often our mentors continue their mentorships beyond this requirement. The majority of our students attend or will attend Montgomery College with whom Future Link has a formal, collaborative partnership. Following the seminar, they are then carefully matched with a mentor who helps them stay focused on their education and career plan with the ultimate goal of self-sufficiency.

The seminar's highlight is an informational interview each student conducts with a professional in their field of interest. Our students' entry point is a 15-week seminar on self-advocacy and career development skills. All are lacking some type of support, whether it's financial or simply informed guidance about what steps they should next take.
